High school graduation is a major achievement – one you should be very proud of. And prom celebrations are the ideal opportunity to show the world you are responsible and can make smart choices. Above all, you want to be sure not to do anything you’ll regret the next morning – or for the rest of your life. All too often, poor choices involving alcohol and drinking and driving end in tragedy – tragedy that is so easily prevented.
To help students make smart choices during prom celebrations, the LCBO has developed and widely distributed
posters and prom tips providing practical advice to students and parents
on avoiding potentially dangerous situations involving alcohol, especially where
minors are concerned.
The LCBO has a year-round policy of zero tolerance for underage would-be customers and prom season is no exception. LCBO Retail staff are on the lookout for minors attempting to purchase for end-of-school – or other – celebrations.
In fiscal 2010-2011, LCBO store staff challenged more than 3.6 million people
who appeared underage, intoxicated or were suspected of buying for either group.
Service was refused to 192,000 people - 82 per cent of refusals were for
age-related reasons.
To further deter underage purchases, LCBO store managers check with local high schools for upcoming dances, proms and special events when students may try to buy alcohol. In some cases, store staff visit interested schools prior to proms to advise grads they are looking out for minors and adults trying to purchase for them. As well, they often invite local high school principals to be present at the store on prom nights to help deter underage purchases.
