MORE THAN $2.5 MILLION RAISED FOR
“SPIRIT OF GIVING” FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
A sincere thank you to all LCBO customers and staff who, during the
month of December 2011, generously donated more than $2.5 million to
LCBO’s Spirit of Giving in-store prompted and donation box
fundraising campaign – a new record!
These donations benefit Ontario’s four children’s hospitals and MADD
Canada. The children’s hospitals use the funds to purchase medical
equipment and provide critical care to Ontario children and support for
their families. MADD Canada uses the funds to produce and distribute its
school assembly program where a compelling film is screened for some 600
Ontario schools and more than half a million students, encouraging them
to make responsible choices and not drink and drive.
LCBO CONTINUES SUPPORT OF “BRING BACK THE
SALMON” PROGRAM
LCBO attended the May 2011 stocking of the three millionth salmon at a
“Bring Back the Salmon” program phase II event at Duffins Creek in
Pickering, Ontario. LCBO announced its contribution of $50,000 per year
and reaffirmed the organization’s five-year commitment to this important
initiative.
This program aims to restore a wild, self-sustaining population of
Atlantic Salmon to Lake Ontario and its tributaries.
LCBO 2010-2011 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT
In 2011,
LCBO launched its first sustainability report outlining the
organization’s environmental strategy, activities and accomplishments.
For many people, the summer season means entertaining outdoors and
getting together with friends, and family. Being a “host with the most”
is more than throwing a great party, it’s also about making sure that
people have a safe and enjoyable time. This summer, as part of its
latest “Deflate the Elephant” campaign, the LCBO is offering the
following innovative tools to help keep guests safe.
• A series of short alcohol-free Mocktail demonstration videos for every
holiday and occasion. The videos feature the Cocktail Deeva Dee Brun
who shows how to make delicious, alcohol-free Mocktails and gives
practical advice on how to host your next party responsibly.
A “Deflate the Elephant” Facebook site
facebook.com/deflatetheelephant provides a forum for visitors to pledge their commitment to help
prevent drinking and driving. They can also
share their own responsible hosting tips and favourite alcohol-free
Mocktail recipes.
A free iPhone app called “Speak Up!”
lets hosts send pre-recorded
messages asking guests to plan ahead to ensure they don’t drink and
drive at an upcoming party or to approach them if they need a cab to
get home safely. The app also offers 50 delicious and easy-to-make,
alcohol-free Mocktails for all guests to enjoy.
For more
details about these tools, visit
deflatetheelephant.com.
This website also provides seasonal responsible hosting and safety tips,
party checklists, Mocktail recipes and unique interactive challenges
which simulate typical home entertaining scenarios.
LCBO’s year-round Check 25 program is a core responsible
retailing program that helps prevent sales to minors by checking the ID
of anyone who looks under 25. New materials are now in our stores
featuring the tagline “25 or under? We check I.D.” to build further
awareness among customers of our policy and to help ensure that alcohol
is not sold to minors.
In Ontario, it’s illegal to consume alcohol before the age of 19. It’s
also illegal for anyone to supply alcohol to minors.
LCBO’s poster Responsibility
Starts Here reminds would-be purchasers that when staff have
reasonable grounds to believe someone is buying for a minor, the Liquor
Licence Act gives them the right and responsibility to refuse the sale.
SPIRIT OF GIVING RAISES RECORD $2 MILLION
During the month of December, LCBO customers and staff raised a record
total of $2 million as part of the annual Spirit of Giving
in-store promoted and donation box fundraising campaign. This campaign
raises funds for Ontario's four sick children's hospitals and Mothers
Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada. These hospitals include SickKids
Foundation, McMaster Children's Hospital, CHEO Foundation and Children's
Health Foundation. The funds raised for MADD Canada support its School
Assembly Program that provides powerful messages to help keep young
people from drinking and driving intoxicated.
Thanks to the generous donations of our customers throughout the month
of October and the funds raised by our employees, LCBO raised a record
$2.1 million for local United Way Centraides across Ontario.
Reusable bags are available in LCBO stores and a portion of sales of
reusable bags, together with proceeds from other fundraising efforts, go
to the LCBO Natural Heritage Fund, which supports community-based
projects to preserve or restore wildlife habitat.
BAG IT BACK
The Ontario Deposit Return Program has one simple goal: to help protect
the environment by diverting LCBO beverage alcohol containers from
landfill.
